filmscapes

In the analogue 35 mm photographic technique (the most widely used) inserting the roll film on the camera is the first obligatory step. Since all the film is light sensitive, and this step is normally performed in plain light, it creates the first latent image, without a lens or camera. This is the first direct and raw impact of light on the film. A foundational act.

The hairy border of the photographic canister (used to protect the unexposed film), create a horizon on virtual landscapes of pure light, disclosed and preserved by chemical process. This is the fluid border between light and shadow. Sometimes the light spills on the shadows, or other way around.

This small segment of the film can be viewed as a metaphor for the photographic process, emphasizing how the picture is also shaped by the technical conditions of production.

The color signature of each film is unique, and each light conditions cause different chemical reactions. In that sense, it would have been interesting to track as many variables as possible… but this will be more encyclopedic and conceptual, and I think it won’t have the same evocative and mesmerizing impact.
